The following document will list all the SQL DBA responsibilities that are required for this client and the level of expertise that is required for performing those tasks.

The level of expertise are as follows:
1 - Beginner
2 - Intermediate
3 - Expert


1. Deployment (Level 2)
a. Deploy SQL scripts, schema changes
b. Deploy data imports, data manipulation, data migration
c. Deploy data quality fixes
d. Automate the deployment process

2. Backups (Level 2/3)
a. Setup/maintain/monitor Database/TLog backups
b. Automation of backup/restores/validation

3. Monitoring (Level 2)
a. Monitor database health (e.g. CPU, memory, disk, etc.)
b. Monitor backup, restore and validation processes
c. Monitor general Database environment counts (e.g. file size, free space,
remaining identity values, etc.)
d. Monitor performance
e. Log shipping monitoring
f. AG monitoring

4. Performance Optimization (Level 2/3)
a. Optimize query and database performance
b. Providing solution to increase overall performance (new SQL feature, hardware,

5. Database Architecture (Level 2/3)
a. Physical layout of database files and filegroups
b. Design/Implement Table structure, location, partitioning
c. Design/Implement Indexes, Constraints, Keys, Data Types, Column Store
d. Design/Implement database environments upgrades

6. Handle/Troubleshoot production issues (Level 1/2/3)
a. Analyze/identify/resolve database production issues
b. Analyze/identify/resolve backup/restore issues
c. Analyze/identify/resolve Log shipping issues
d. Analyze/identify/resolve availability groups issues
e. Analyze SQL Server/Windows logs
f. Analyze Database performance issues
g. Analyze/identify/resolve concurrency, locking, blocking and deadlock issues
h. Forensic analysis

7. Scripting (Level 2/3)
a. Writing scripts including TSQL, powershell, batch files.
b. Review TSQL scripts (correctness, conventions, performance, etc.),
8. Development Environment (Level 1/2/3)
a. Update staging environment and databases
b. Database localization
c. Test pre deployment database changes
d. Test new feature
9. Capacity planning (Level 2/3)
a. Storage
b. CPU

10. New Server/Equipment (Level 2/3)
a. Spec’ing hardware requirements
b. Hardware evaluation/benchmarking (CPU, Memory, Storage, etc.)
c. Hardware performance testing
d. Migrating a server from old machine to a new machine
e. Storage capacity planning
f. Storage evaluation/setup

11. Updates\Patching (Level 2)
a. Perform SQL server patching on scheduled basis, The task includes the following
i. Review the pending patches and notify the development if there is a risk
for Viventium applications/services
ii. Verify that same patches were installed and tested on the “Live-test”
iii. Schedule time for patching
iv. Perform sanity test of the Viventium applications/services after the
updates were done

12. Production Contact (Level 1/2/3)
a. Contact Rackspace when there is an issue or change (e.g. SQL backups,
b. Be a contact for Rackspace when they found an issue
c. Monitor rackspace Alerts/Monitoring tools
d. Monitor rackspace backups

13. High availability/Failover (Level 2/3)
a. Design and implement a solution for high availability/failover when some servers
go down.
b. Implement/Maintain availability groups
c. Documentation and defining SLAs
d. Periodically test the solution

14. Disaster Recovery (Level 2/3)
a. Design and implement a solution for disaster when some servers go down.
b. Implement/Maintain Log shipping
c. Documentation and defining SLAs
d. Periodically test the solution

15. Documentation (Level 1/2)
a. Create and maintain a documentation of all the Database related components for
b. Document all the equipment
c. Document all the services
d. Document all the SQL Agent Jobs
e. Runbooks for production deployment/patching
f. Build document for new installation

1. Minimum 5+ years of experience as a DBA/SQL Developer in a production OLTP
2. Experience in SQL server installation/administrations/updates/upgrades (2016)
3. Strong experience with TSQL
4. Powershell (3 or later)
5. Ability to evaluate server/storage hardware, RAID configurations
6. Good knowledge of windows administration (2016)
7. Experience in troubleshooting and optimizing query execution plans and performance
8. Experience in troubleshooting concurrency, locking, blocking and deadlock issues
9. Experience with log shipping
10. Experience with availability groups (advantage)
